We tend to think mostly in terms of how to spend less and get items for cheaper. That’s where sales, deals, discount codes come in. However there are some ways of thinking about money that are much more powerful than simply searching for discounts and deals. Here are a few -

1. 10% of what you earn is yours to keep. This is from a book called ‘Richest Man in Babylon’. The underlying message here is that the money you earn - whether it’s a salary or some other source is for you, and not just for you to give away to other people under the guise of deals and savings. You should figure out what you would really do if you had a certain amount of money put away - would it be a vacation? would it go into your savings? And then, you should start putting away 10-30% of your pre-tax earnings.
2. Credit Cards are evil - throw them away. This is a really, really simple thing to do once you understand that credit cards tend to make you forget that the money you’re spending is your own had earned money and not just some detached entity that is unlimited. So throw away your credit cards.
3. Debt of any form is bad - This is exceedingly simple. When you take debt, you pay off the debt and the interest on the debt. A lot of society today is geared towards the concept of debt - your car, your house, credit cards - there’s a lot of pressure from society to get into debt. The only thing debt does is take away your freedom and peace of mind. Stay away when you can.
4. Make a budget.
5. Know what you’re spending on. Take a look at your bank account and tally up the expenses - what are you spending on? What of those expenses are things that are necessary or things that give you a lot of pleasure? The rest - you can eliminate.
6. Stay away from recurring costs - whenever possible stay away from recurring costs like monthly memberships and such. These usually end up being much, much more expensive than what they seem like at first. This is especially true for software and web services.
7. Live a little below your means. Just a little - however a little below what you could afford.  This doesn’t apply to your one or two favourite things.
8. When it comes to your work - never cut corners - When it comes to your career, any money that is put in is an investment - so don’t think of it as an expense, and don’t cut corners at all.
9. When you don’t have a competitive advantage don’t compete. This is from Jack Welch. A lot of people go into the stock market and the property market assuming that they can take on the experts - people that work 24/7 and have the resources of huge corporations, inside information and other, often illegal, advantages. Think about it carefully - do you really think you can in your 5-10 hrs a week beat people who work 100% of their work time on these markets. The rule to remember is - look around you and if you can’t find a sucker - it’s usually you.
10. Stay away from Fear and Greed - Fear is you not doing the things you want to do and not taking risks because you’re afraid of failure. Greed is you thinking you can get money without providing value or some real benefit. There’s a reason why get rich quick schemes are so popular - because people become greedy and stop thinking rationally. The only people who get rich quick are the people who think up Get Rich Quick schemes.

Sky TV has two great new offers to coincide with the start of the new premier league season. I’m not a big fan of that fact that unlike the US  (where all major sports are for free on TV and supported by Ads) the UK has Sky and Setanta with a monopoly over soccer - hwoever, there aren’t really that many options so might as well go with Sky for now. Do keep in mind that ITV has free coverage of champions league (shared with Sky), and England matches.

Nov 13th, 2008 update: Alienware don’t currently have  discount code - however, they do have free shipping on everything from now until Christmas!

Also, I spent a bunch of time going through their website and building out a custom gaming laptop. My current one is really good (core 2 duo, 4gb ram, 256 mb on board ram on nvidia card and it uses another 700 or so mb ram from the laptop ram) so I’ll probably wait - however I’ll have to choose between a lower priced but less good looking dell xps and an alienware laptop - btw Dell owns Alienware.

August 11th Update: Alienware Area-51 m15x notebook discount code: AWTDM15X for 5% off the m15x notebook. The alienware voucher code is valid until Sept 22nd 2008.
