A big thanks to the gals from yahoo answers who chimed in on this - louise, tabitha, betty, kim, s.c., kitty kat claws, moomooismypuppy and Graveyard Queen. This post forms one of the building blocks for Girlfriend Birthday and Valentine’s Gift Guide - what to get your girlfriend for a Special Occasion or for no reason at all.

 Anyways here are some answers from the girls in no particular order -

1. a huge teddy bear 
2. If you are talking about for valentines day, you could always go with the traditional flowers a box of chocolates and a nice dinner out. or you can go out on a limb and buy a puppy 
3. roses! 1000000000 of them.  [Edit: consider Flowers Direct - they have some beautiful looking bouquets.
4. [wow - this girl really lucked out]  he set up a scavenger hunt around the house with pictures from our previous dates.. at the end of the night we made a scrapbook together… along with the pictures were cute little things like a teddy bear. roses… coupon books… chocolate
5. For me, the best gifts would be:Champagne.
   Every girl loves a bit of champagne, and as a traditional celebrational drink you can’t go wrong.Liqueur chocolates.
   Liqueur chocolates are a rarity in everyday life, and you certainly feel treated when you get them as a gift!Trip to a restaurant
   All us girls love a night out, so a surprise trip to a fancy restaurant would be an amazing gift. It has to be a restaurant though, not McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King or alike.Valentines bear
   Though it may be a common gift, a valentines bear is a great gift for any girl on Valentines day. Cuddly animals are everlasting hugs and can be cherished dearly when from the one you love.A bouquet of roses
   Roses are the flower of love, and a bouquet of 12 roses shows unconditional love. Though it may seem to be a simple gift, the symbolism makes it a very romantic gift.Other great gifts are things to share, as we girls are very sharing people! When getting a valentines day gift for a girl, remember that symbolism means alot, and therefore traditional gifts are good. Red is the valentines day colour, so use it :) 
6. Something cute and heartfelt. Something that shows he’s thought about it rather than going out and buying the generic box of chocolate and bouquet of roses. Maybe a list of reasons he loves you, a coupon book full of passes to go see a chick flick, go iceskating, get a massage, candlelight dinner, etc. Anything extremely cheesey and potentially embarrassing is usually the best bet. 
7. [another greatbf here] What really makes a gift special and meaningful is to put some thought into it and find out what that person likes. Take time and effort to get it right. If you know she likes chocolate…..find out what kind she truly enjoys, not everyone likes dark chocolate….or caramel chocolate…..etc. I love roses, some women are allergic to flowers. You can’t just buy any old perfume, not all women wear it anyways. All women are different, naturally jewelry is nice…..but we all like certain kinds. You have to KNOW the person to get a perfect gift. I would have to say my favorite gift was when my boyfriend had a candlelit bubblebath waiting with my favorite cd playing, a glass of champagne next to the tub, sexy lingerie to slip into afterward and a candlelit dinner waiting for me after the bath. When dinner was over, our bed was sprinkled with rose petals, more candlelight, soft & sensual music in the background……fresh fruit and chocolate next to the bed with more champagne. He gave me a hot oil massage and plenty of LOVIN’…………IT WAS PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!
