Gifts for Dad - Father’s Day Gift Ideas

This is a gift and ideas guide for Father’s Day - for a list of offers and discount codes visit the Father’s Day deals page.

There’s an interesting story behind father’s day centered around Sonora Dodd who had been raised by a single father and decided after listening to a sunday sermon on Mother’s Day in 1909 that there should be a similar Father’s Day. After a long campaign and incremental increases in the popularity of the festival, President Woodrow Wilson approved of the idea of celebrating Father’s Day in 1916″. However, there wasn’t an official decree until President Lyndon Johnson signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the Third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
Well now that you know the history behind it …

What should you get your Dad for Father’s Day?
A hug every morning is good and you better me doing that already. For a special gift it’s good to remember that it’s a gift for him and something that he’s passionate about and something that shows your love for him are obvious good choices.

Gifts centered around his passions

Identify the things he’s most passionate about.  Let’s say - golf, fishing, food and football. It’s really important to put some thought into it and ask his friends (and not your mom) to get a really accurate answer for things related to what he’s passionate about. Remember that moms tend to be biased towards things that he needs as opposed to things he wants. Go through a few quick questions -

  1. Are there any things related to his passions that are obviously missing? A grill perhaps, or a new fishing pole since his old one is damaged.
  2. Would something add considerably to his enjoyment?  A better golf club or a jersey of his favourite football player.
  3. Is there something he would enjoy and would also be a reminder of your love? A knit sweater that you make or you pesonalize for him, or something you cook for him.
  4. What are the times you saw him really enjoy something - was it a game - would he like game tickets? was it a meal - should you take him to the same place for dinner? what else?

At this point you should have a few ideas of what you could get him. Next lets move on to a completely different way to look at gifts for your Dad.

Gifts centered around usefulness

Dads are usually very good at providing for the family and tend to forget about themselves. A gift that is really useful and covers a need that your Dad is ignoring is a great touch. Here are a few examples

  1. Clothes and accessories like wallets, shoes, and things that he would use a lot. Ties are a bit risky since he might not wear them as often. If you’re absolutely sure then go for it. However, a pair of shoes makes a much better gift.
  2. Tools and gadgets that he can use around the house. This is a good gift if he likes using such things.
  3. Books and Reference books.

Gifts that your father can cherish and keep with him.

These are total ‘Its the thought that counts’ gifts. A few good examples are

  1. A digital photo frame.
  2. A watch.
  3. An item that you make for him.
  4. A scrapbook of pictures of you and him together.

What would i buy my dad?

As an example of how you might go about it I’ll describe what I would buy my dad if i had to pick right now. As for some context, my Dad loves the stock market, he’s a little reluctant to buy stuff for himself (even when he needs it), he loves certain types of food, and so forth. My top 10 list would be

  1. A really great pair of leather shoes.
  2. A watch (i actually bought him one 6 months ago - however, i might buy him another since watches are cool).
  3. I wouldn’t buy him a tie or cologne - to be quite frank I don’t recommend either unless your dad loves them.
  4. My dad loves whisky (and other drinks to some extent) so a nice single malt whisky.
  5. A Gift Card and a gift voucher to a bookstore.
  6. A subscription to a stocks magazine or website.
  7. A Jacket - yeah, i think a really good jacket makes a really good gift.
  8. Books that i think would appeal to him.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas and helps you. A golden rule to keep in mind is that things your Dad really wants (that new gadget etc.) will always make better gifts that things he really needs (clothes etc.) and gifts that surprise and almost seem a pointless waste of money sometimes make the best gifts.
